Clothing
Both of us rely on our Carhartt pants, hoodies and jackets. My husband and I appreciate the fit and function of our Carhartt pants. They have many different styles, can trust them to stay up around the waist, and are functional and easy to move around in. They seem to take a beating and last a long time. Coats and jackets are available for all types of environments and weather and you can never have too many of these. More expensive options exist, yet we go back to our tried and true brand.
Good quality socks are also a plus. Find ones that have arch support, or look for good fitting wool socks that do not fall down throughout the day for colder months. I am always amazed at the variety of socks we own.
Miscellaneous Supplies
This is such a broad category but find there are items we purchase over and over again. Remember, most tradesmen have to acquire their our own tools and supplies so when they receive them as gifts it is appreciated. For this section I am going to bullet point our top items.
- Clickable Sharpie pens
- Carpenter pencils
- Notepads, preferrably 3×5 and waterproof
- Waterproof gloves
- Whimp Wrap or 3M Coban Tape
- Boot or shoe dryer
- Heated lunch box
- Cooler
- Nonperishable snacks like nuts, protein bars and Pop Corners
Let’s talk about the coban tape. We started using this with our wood carving activities for our tools plus to protect our fingers. We now have added this to some of our work tools. For example, we completed a large quarry tile job in a commercial kitchen and there was so much troweling. We wrapped this tape around the trowel handle and it helped with grip and hand fatigue while adding cushion. As a bonus, if fingers are tender, chapped or have minor cuts wrap this tape around the tips of your fingers to help get through the day. Provides much extra protection without restriction. Tools and Tool Organization
Tool bags and pouches are always nice. We have to carry different sets of tools depending on the job and having many organizational items makes it easier to sort and store them, and then just grab what is needed when we prepare for a site. Our preference are tool bags and Amazon has many great options: click here to view. We have tried the packout systems, but for us the bags work better. I also recommend the pouches to store blades, bits, and other small items.
We go through a lot of knee pads! Of course we specialize in flooring so that is not a surprise. But what I do find amazing is the lack of good quality knee pads out there. So many pinch behind the knee, consistently fall down, or make your knee cap roll. However, we have found a set that fit nice, keeps the knee cap in place and straps above and below the knee so no falling down. They are made by ToughBuilt. If anyone has found ones comparable to these or better, please leave a comment at the end of this post. Always on the lookout for good knee pads.
Gift Cards
Gift cards are always an excellent idea. They can be for their favorite restaurant or coffee shop. Or to a big box store where they purchase their tools and supplies. Maybe even for gas stations. So many times we will run into a local gas station or truck stop and pick up a sandwich and a snack if we didn’t have time (or were too tired from long hours) to pack our lunch for the day.
