I needed to find a portable quilt design wall to use while traveling in the RV so I could layout my quilt blocks to audit the design. I looked at purchasing a foldable one, but the cost was higher than I wanted to spend. The wall is great, and if I had the funds I may have just purchased it. However, I chose to search for a DIY version.
I found a suggestion to use a flannel backed tablecloth which you can roll up and put away when needed. I found one on Amazon that was the perfect size measuring 70 x 70 inches square. It was the only one large enough to hold the quilt I was working on. I want to share with you my experience using it.
Results
You can layout your squares anywhere and they are protected because of the vinyl. Be aware that you cannot just roll it up with your squares still laid out, and put it away when needed as suggested. When you lift the tablecloth the pieces will move, much to my disappointment. I believe it is because the flannel backing is of lower quality.
Yet I will continue to use this because it is large enough that you can lay this out wherever you have space and your squares are protected. And when not in use it can be stored without taking up much space. As you can see below it was used both outside and inside.
Once satisfied with the design I suggest you mark the the first block of each row, and place the marker in the top left hand corner. This will enable you to remember the direction of the blocks because of the consistency of the placement. Now you can stack your blocks, fold up your portable design wall, and carry them to the sewing machine.
As a bonus, you will also have a cute tablecloth when you need it.
