We decided to take time out of our week and make a trip to the University of Mount Union’s Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center located in Minerva Ohio. We only spent a couple hours there, but will return for further exploration. There is just to much to see. The Nature Center is open year round and is free to the public. Just make sure to check their website for hours the Visitor Center and Bird Observatory are open.
Forest Buchanan Trail
On this day we chose the Forest Buchanan Trail. While this was a shorter trail, it provided over an hour of entertainment for us. Our first stop was a visit next to the cornfield because we had to get the children standing in the corn. Next up was the field of sunflowers. What a fun spot to stop and take some pictures.
After that we walked over to the checkerboard in the field but decided that was not for us on this day so we continued over to the flower beds. They had a beautiful selection of Dahlias to observe. Then up the observation tower and on through the woods.
The wooded part of the trail had many man made huts, or wiki-ups. There is a stream bed, but it was dry. Included at one end is a fairy village where people may contribute their own creations. Trees were leaking sap, and of course Matt found a burl.
We were disappointed to see that we missed the labyrinth, so that’s something for a future visit.
If you are interested in Dahlias or other cut flowers for your garden I recommend one, or all, of Erin Benzakein’s books.
Visitor Center and Bird Observatory
After our trail hike, we made a stop in the visitor center. We were surprised to see the artifact of a Wooly Mammoth that was discovered one mile up the road during an excavation. They had a left foot, a tooth, rib bone, and part of a femur on display. I was so engrossed hearing and reading about it that I forgot to take a picture! So you must stop by and see if for yourself.
They also have a bird observatory so you can sit and watch the wildlife activity. It was a nice spot to rest and use the restrooms. We were even able to sample fresh produce grown on the grounds. That day’s selection included apples, tomatoes and peppers. Our niece said the apples were the best she ever tasted.
Recommended Family Outing
We recommend that you plan a visit with your friends and family. We will definitely be returning. I think a full day hike with a picnic would be fantastic. The Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center is a must for a fun place to explore the outdoors and spend time with others. And best of all it is free.
